Overview
The impact has been severe, especially in and around Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira. Buildings have collapsed, hospitals and infrastructure have been damaged, and many people have been forced from their homes. Reports from the first 48 hours indicate that more than 200 people have died and thousands have been injured, with numbers expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. Families are still searching for loved ones, and many people remain trapped under debris.
In the immediate aftermath, local responders, community members, and international teams are working urgently to rescue survivors and provide care. This is a disaster unfolding in a country already facing deep economic and infrastructure challenges. These conditions can make recovery slower and harder, especially for communities with fewer resources and limited access to services.
Immediate needs include safe shelter, medical care, clean water, and access to food. Over time, the focus will shift to rebuilding homes, restoring local systems, and supporting community-led recovery.
