CALIFORNIA STORM RESPONSE: California is in a period of repeated atmospheric river events that are leading to flooding, power outages, and mudslides across much of the state. The state is coordinating with the League of California Community Foundations and Philanthropy California to highlight the Disaster Relief Recovery, and Resilience Fund as a centralized opportunity for funders. The fund deploys response resources through community foundations–-trusted intermediaries who are deeply connected to impacted communities. Its focus on long-term resilience alongside relief and recovery ensures that communities can mitigate the impact of extreme events and be ready to respond when they inevitably occur.

HUMBOLDT EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE: On Thursday, December 20, 2022, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit rural Humboldt County in the early morning, followed by over 60 substantial aftershocks. The small towns and Tribal communities hit the worst--Fortuna, Ferndale, Loleta, Rio Dell, Bear River Rancheria, and Wiyot Tribe--have left community members without housing, power, and/or water, just days before Christmas. This damage was compounded on Sunday, January 1, 2023 by a second, 5.4 magnitude earthquake, centered in Eureka.

MCF distributed $100,000 toward the most vulnerable through the Humboldt Area Foundation’s Disaster Response and Resilience Fund.

MATCHING OPPORTUNITY: MCF is committed to matching dollar for dollar to $100,000 with the hopes that DAF holders and community members alike support this recovery effort on or before February 15, 2023.
