Om Prakash: Intuitive Nature | Paintings from 2004-2015

MCF hosted the exhibition, “Om Prakash: Intuitive Nature, Paintings from 2004-2015,” from September 21, 2016 to January 13, 2017, featuring eighty paintings and eight drawings. It was the artists’ fifty-seventh solo exhibition, and the first monographic show of his work in the U.S.

For over sixty years, the renowned Indian artist and teacher, Om Prakash, has been creating complex, abstract paintings drawn from both the timeless visual culture of Indian tantric imagery and developments in modern art. His oeuvre includes hundreds of luminous artworks focused on the relationship of mind, nature, spirit, and the inner universe. From 1964-1966, Prakash attended Columbia University and the Art Students League in New York City on a Fulbright scholarship, where he developed friendships with many well-known abstract artists including Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, who both appreciated his approach to abstract painting. Later, in 1985, he was one of eight artists selected by the late California artist Lee Mullican for the exhibition Neo-Tantra: Contemporary Indian Painting Inspired by Traditionpresented at the UCLA Galleries in Los Angeles.

Om Prakash: Intuitive Nature is the artists’ 57th solo exhibition and the first monographic show in the US. Included are eighty paintings and eight drawings dating from 2004-2015. These works were shipped to the US from India over the summer for this special presentation. A 64-page catalog has been published for the occasion by Watts Art Publications that includes a feature essay by Los Angeles based writer and curator Anuradha Vikram and introduction by Patricia Watts, Consulting Curator for the Marin Community Foundation. The exhibition is available to travel 2017 and beyond.
