Position Purpose:
The Senior Director for The Family Office of Philanthropy (TFO) leads the team within MCF’s Philanthropic Partnerships department supporting Virtuoso and Bespoke clients. Billed as the modern alternative to private or family foundations, these services are currently available to funds of $5 million or more. Virtuoso and Bespoke services provide an effective and streamlined approach to designing and implementing giving strategies and include the administrative, financial, and other benefits of a grants management systems and donor-advised fund (DAF) or/and Supporting Organization (SO) structures. The Senior Director serves as both the internal and external face of the department, supports the team serving the above mentioned clients, and is responsible for new and existing programs and offerings provided to these donors.
Collectively, this team serves 127 funds/families whose combined philanthropic assets total over $1.0 billion and whose grantmaking has exceeded $1.1 billion over the past five years. Based on success to date and an amplified increase in interest in tailored and comprehensive philanthropic services, MCF anticipates significant growth in this department with a coinciding need for developing new services to enable transformative philanthropic impact.
Responsibility Level:
The Senior Director for TFO reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and manages a team of approximately 6 Senior Advisors and Associates.
Essential Functions:
Leading a Team
- Guides, builds, and inspires a team that manages Virtuoso and Bespoke clients to succeed in developing and implementing their philanthropic structure and strategies, including issue and organization research, developing and managing prospective and current grantee relationships, administrative support, and board or stakeholder management as needed.
- Ensures that Senior Advisors have the bandwidth, tools and resources to effectively manage portfolios and provide the highest quality consultative services to MCF clients.
- Fosters diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the team and throughout TFO’s client work.
- Oversees operations and conduct financial analysis, planning, and reporting for the team.
- Partners with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Senior Director of Operations, and the Senior Director of Philanthropic Planning to support the Philanthropic Partnerships’ Department’s efforts, to enable cohesive cross-team collaboration, and to foster business development efforts.
Leading Strategy and Service Design
- Defines, develops and implements Virtuoso and Bespoke strategy and client offerings.
- Ensures offerings provide clients with educational experiences and access to opportunities meaningfully engage them in their philanthropy, with the Foundation, and with each other.
- Serves as a primary liaison to other departments to foster the creation of services and communications for the Foundation’s donors.
- Works with the Communications team to define and deliver MCF messaging.
Facilitating Philanthropy
- Cultivates and facilitates new charitable gifts into existing funds.
- Plays a key role in increasing impact through strategic activities across the organization. Works in close partnership with program leaders on ideas to meet emergent needs, fund innovation, and report on results.
- Collaborates with partner organizations on funding opportunities. Meets and communicates, as appropriate, with nonprofit leaders and other issue experts to stay abreast of organizations, programs, and funding needs that fall within current and prospective areas of interest for a significant number of the team’s funds.
- Monitors trends and policy changes affecting the philanthropic sector.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Performance Standards:
The Senior Director for The Family Office of Philanthropy will be evaluated by the Chief Philanthropy Officer on her/his/their ability to perform the essential functions of the position; the ability to demonstrate the skills described below; the ability to meet annual individual and departmental goals; and the ability to complete job duties in a professional, cooperative, and timely manner. The incumbent will also be evaluated on her/his/their communication skills and professional interactions with staff, trustees, and community members as well as the ability to listen carefully, think critically, and understand issues.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ten years of experience in relationship management, client services, or development with a focus on ultra-high net-worth individuals.
- 5 years of experience in team management.
- 10 years of experience working in philanthropy or in the non-profit community.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills (listening, interpersonal, oral, and written).
- Proficient writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to gather and organize information appropriately.
- Strong strategic planning and implementation skills; research and synthesizing abilities.
- Excellent ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple competing assignments and responsibilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and the ability to effectively utilize proprietary software. Salesforce proficiency is a preference.
- A high degree of professionalism, confidence, and flexibility that allows the incumbent to work collaboratively and effectively with clients and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a team environment. Ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with the Foundation staff, members of the community, colleagues in other foundations, and members of the nonprofit sector.

Salary Range: $180,000 to $190,000
