To increase the availability of affordable housing for individuals and families and ensure that residents receive the services they need to remain affordably housed.
Increasing Affordable Housing
Marin is widely recognized as having one of the least affordable housing markets in the United States. With median home sales above $800,000, lower-wage earners face considerable challenges finding housing in Marin that's affordable and located close to work, school, and transportation. The high cost of housing leaves many families in Marin with less to spend on food, childcare, and healthcare, and less to invest in savings. Seniors are priced out of the neighborhoods in which they have spent their lives. Healthcare workers, farm workers, bank tellers, and teachers cannot afford to live in the community where they work.
Marin Community Foundation is dedicated to creating housing opportunities in Marin that are affordable and accessible to families and individuals with lower incomes. To support this goal, MCF will make targeted investments in three strategic areas: housing policy, affordable housing development, and homelessness prevention.
Under this goal, MCF will support projects that incorporate the following strategies:
Strategy 1: Increase public support for affordable housing and influence zoning changes that support affordable housing.
By removing barriers to development, Marin can create a range of housing choices at different levels of affordability that preserve the environment and increase the diversity of Marin.
MCF will seek to partner with nonprofit organizations that foster inclusive housing policies at the local level and advocate for changes in public policies that have impeded development. This work will also focus on identifying innovative financing mechanisms to accelerate new affordable housing development in Marin. Prospective grantees will be drawn from the housing, transit, and environmental sectors.
Process for Strategy 1: RFPs will be issued to community organizations that are being invited to apply for support under this strategy. This strategy will not use an open competitive grants process.
Strategy 2: Make investments in affordable housing, both rental properties and owned housing that take advantage of specific market opportunities
Marin Community Foundation will seek partnerships with affordable housing developers, homeless service providers, and local jurisdictions to increase affordable housing options in Marin. Funding in this area will balance new housing production with emerging market opportunities to increase the supply of homes that are affordable to those with lower incomes.

Housing trends reported in Marin reveal an increase in the number of families and individuals that are precariously housed, including those facing eviction, paying over half of household income on rent, or living in substandard housing. Targeted interventions can include emergency assistance, mediation, and re-housing. Investments in this area will help families and individuals at the lowest income levels to become or remain affordably housed.
